Food Inflation

Anyone check the prices of milk, butter or meat lately?
At Costco, the bulk 80/20 ground beef (which is low-end, chemically enhanced and that I refuse to eat) was $8.99 a pound! And the bulk individual steaks cost more than at regular grocery stores, which is not cheap to begin with. It makes no sense.
Non-organic butter is now $7 a pound and organic milk $5.50 for half gallon! I haven't checked, but I bet I could still get Kerrygold grass fed butter for less than that.

Yes, I'd noticed that too. I just saw chuck stew meat at Whole Foods for $9 a pound, which was no worse than $6/lb just a few months ago. Steaks went beyond my budget quite a while ago...the ones I saw were an eye-popping $18/lb. Is something going on?? I would not have expected this with fuel prices going down, and there's been no extreme weather to blame this on either.
Time to think about some creative beef meals: liver, beef heart, oxtail. I made an oxtail soup a while back that was to die for and super easy.

Does anyone remember back when tuna was cheap? I remember buying it for myself back in high school (I just started getting into weights and football) to get more protein. I want to say it was like 40 cents a can or something like that, now it's a dollar for the same can.

I used to check the meat futures a few times a day, but now I only check once every couple weeks
Costco is never the cheapest source of fresh meat, though. Higher quality perhaps, but local grocery is almost always cheaper

Higher quality than say Whole Foods? The worst quality in my book are in all the el cheapo Mexican groceries. Truly vile stuff. Tongues, pig heads, tripe, etc. with no idea of the origin. Another shining example of the lack of assimilation, if you ask me.

No, the meat quality in those Mexian groceries stores is really the bottom of the barrel which is why its so cheap (and poor illegal immigrants buy it). I've tried some of it before. And it is very questionable as to where it is all sourced since COO its not legally required when shown in display cases. I'd hesitate to say Mexico, as it could easily be China, etc..

So? What does it matter where it comes from? It all turns brown and stinks when you are finished with it.
And, I'm not serious that source does not matter, but I've never asked the meat market guy (Costco or the high dollar local prime beef place) where his beef, chicken, etc. comes from. I'm still alive.

The meat sources for those Mexican groceries are probably not too different from the Asian groceries in, for example, Flushing (Queens). I bet they get meat that's about to be declared unfit for human consumption because it's about to expire, but technically it's still in the time window when you buy it. But, I've seen those Mexican groceries let deliveries sit out for hours even in summer. Plus those stores are filthy. The Asian markets are a big step up in that department.
