This is why I mentioned the possibility of a repeat of the Dark Ages. I'm sure during the Roman Empire such a thing could not have been imagined, but it happened.

I've read that people in hunter-gatherer societies "worked" only 3 hours a day, and you can consider them to be self-employed. Contrast that with our 8-12 hour workdays functioning as little cogs in big wheels, on top of the work required to maintain ourselves & households...definitely you can argue that our quality of life has taken a big hit.
The tradeoff for us is greater population (perhaps a mixed blessing) and much greater life expectancy, as well as enormously greater creature comforts for those small slices of time when we're not working. Would you make this trade?
Early retirement is a great way to answer that question. You get the best of both worlds: once you've paid your dues, you can have that 3 hour a day work schedule, and you get to keep the creature comforts & life span.

I love this kind of stuff. I'll refrain from invoking Hans Moravec and Ray Kurzweil for the umpteenth time (Oops).
Had forgotten all about edge.org. Thanks for that.

"After medicine in the 20th century focused on healing the sick, now it is more and more focused on upgrading the healthy, which is a completely different project"
Really?

Well he did say "more and more", not "more than" and I think that's certainly true.

Ught, spoken like a true ivory tower academic anti-capitalist liberal with his head up his ass. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!
This guy is a joke. Sorry, TennPaGa.

But I see a silhouette of a head up an ass on yonder curtain. I feel I should intervene!
