Bush was speaking at a forum hosted by The Conservative Leadership Project, a group with ties to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who moderated the event. His comments came the day after a shooter at an Oregon community college killed nine before being killed by police. Several others are recovering from injuries.

When a reporter asked Bush whether the remark was a mistake, he replied: "No, it wasn’t a mistake, I said exactly what I said, explain to me what I said wrong."

"You said 'stuff happens,'" the  reporter said.

"Things happen all the time," Bush said. "Things -- is that better?"

He later elaborated: "Things happen all the time. A child drowns in a pool and the impulse is to pass a law that puts fencing around a pool... The cumulative effect of this is that in some cases, you don’t solve the problem by passing the law and you’re imposing on large numbers of people burdens that make it harder for our economy to grow, make it harder to protect liberty."
This is the things libertarians fapfap over.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you are saying.

In true Jeb! fashion, he managed to say it in a callous, negative-sound-bite-worthy way that is sure be endlessly repeated in the media, eventually leading to a sheepish and awkward "clarification." What a pitiful campaigner.

Instead, what do you think Trump would have said?

Take a look for yourself. What did Trump say?

Hmm, seems like he was just blunt about it.  "These things happen".  Isn't that what Bush said?  Weird.

Now ask yourself: why can Trump get away with it while Bush can't?

I asked myself, but haven't come up with a great answer.  Let me try though:  Because Trump's followers not only are not offended by such callous-sounding statements, but actually welcome them.

How did I do?  ;)
Ding ding ding!

Except I think they are offended by callous comments if it's not from the type of person they like.  But then again that's all of us to some degree.

I think that's part of it, and the other part of it is in Trump's own delivery, wording, and persona. I've been reading Scott Adams' recent articles on Trump and have found them to be really enlightening, helping to shed some light on what used to be a totally mystifying topic. I encourage you to have a look, and start from the beginning: http://blog.dilbert.com/tagged/Trump/page/6

Basically his theory is that Trump is actually a low-ego, high self-control, master persuader whose every word and action is carefully calculated to optimize and consolidate his power and influence--the only possible alternative being that he is the luckiest jerk in the history of the world.

The weird way Trump talks it is all but certain he is delivering a programmed monologue intended to achieve a desired effect.  In other words, he may be a master marketer which is certainly the most critical business skill for success.  Does he talk as a political candidate in the same way he did on The Apprentice?

I see he has trumped my suspicions.  I am but a trumpet...

BTW, is this the Scott Adams of adventure game fame during the 80's?

He's being tongue-in-cheek about it but is just outlining the evolution of persuasion and its connection to Trump.  You have to admit, Trump is a master at it.  And masters usually win elections.  Think Lincoln, Kennedy, Reagan, Clinton, Obama vs Ford, Carter, Nixon, Bush Sr, etc..  Reagan, after losing to Carter the first time, changed his tactics and became more like Trump is now.

Robbins and Trump aren't even at the same level.  Trump has actual substance, Robbins is a Steel Magnolia.
