I guess it's never been under control. One day it was a guy with a brain tumor in a clock tower. Ever since Columbine (which wasn't the first), it has just become a meme. Very hard to prevent.

There's a darkly clever shower thought on reddit that because this is the age of spoiled kids and instant gratification, mass shooters  are what they are because they're too lazy to be serial killers.

I don't agree with that but the idea of simply offing oneself and leaving the rest of the world alone seems to have given way to something worse.
