I've thought about a small safe, but that's like holding up a big red sign saying "Valuable stuff inside. Steal this."
If you're going to do a safe, I think you'd have to make it big and fixed in place, so that it would take too long to move it. Barring that, finding clever hiding places for your stuff (and leaving instructions for family members on where your stash is) is probably best.
We had a thread sometime back where people listed their favorite inventive ideas, but I would guess that a professional thief would probably know about most of them.
