Bowe Berghdal

Post by madbean »

Been hearing extremely negative opinions all day about Mr. Berghdal, from co-workers, talking heads and interviewees on Fox News. The mildest sentiment seems to be that he ought to at least spend the rest of his life in prison. Some, including a co-worker and whoever was filling in for Bill O'Reilly tonight said he ought to be taken before a firing squad and shot immediately.

But all I can think of if is this.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Calley

The man who led the My Lai massacre in Vietnam, being found guilty of 22 counts of murder,  served three years of house arrest before receiving a presidential pardon and has been a free man ever since. If you've never read about the My Lai massacre I highly recommend that you do if you have the stomach for reading about things like mothers being forced to give blow jobs to soldiers in front of their children before both being shot in the head and dumped into a ditch.

But hey, it was a time of war and we are a forgiving nation.

Unless you decide you don't want to fight any more. Then there is no forgiveness.

Says a lot about the world we live in, doesn't it?

It makes sense to me. The entity doing the punishing is their employer. William Calley did his job, maybe just a little too well. Bergdahl didn't do his job.

:P
Human behavior is economic behavior. The particulars may vary, but competition for limited resources remains a constant.

Bergdahl may well serve as the private Eddie Slovak of the war on terror. The latter was the only soldier executed for desertion during WWII, though there were many.

They do need to make their point, don't they?

(And for the record I am a Vietnam War deserter, although I only deserted after doing my time in Vietnam. I would have deserted earlier but I couldn't get up the courage to go and steal one of the SamPans and sail to Thailand like I dreamed about every night of my captivity).

If only I had the courage back then that I still think I have today.

Someone fill me in about Mr. Berghdal?  (I avoid the MSM).

Barack Obama traded five of the worst of the worst Guantanamo terrorists to get him back, (some of whom have returned/attempted to return to the fight). he is now being given a court marshal charged with desertion (5 yrs) and possibly joining the enemy (life in prison)...
