The digital currency bitcoin has struggled to gain acceptance in the mainstream.
A new index could change all that.
The New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday launched a new Bitcoin index (NYXBT) that will track the dollar value of one bitcoin based on how the currency trades at select bitcoin exchanges.
"Bitcoin values are quickly becoming a data point that our customers want to follow as they consider transacting, trading or investing with this emerging asset class," NYSE President Thomas Farley said in a statement, as TIME magazine reported. It'll probably be the Amiga of the cryptocurrency realm. It has many flaws that are roadbocks to long-term sustainability. So I suspect the meme will live on in subsequent monetary revolutions.

I think they are the "Beanie Baby" of cryptocurrencies.
