Government Data Breaches

Post by screwtape »

Hackers are able to strike again....

I find this very ironic because the federal government went after the company where I work for its lack of data security. Because of our status in the financial industry they weren't legally able to fine us but they published the results of their audit far and wide warning customers to do business with us at their own risk (it didn't work very well, btw).

So talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Makes me wonder about a couple of things, at least...

1.) All that data the NSA has been mining - do they have that secured so that Chinese hackers can't read our emails?

2.) Is Treasury Direct secure? I worry about trying to log in there someday only to discover they have no knowledge of me. Can you imagine getting on the phone and trying to straighten that out with some government bureaucrat?

Quote from article: "OPM will provide credit monitoring and identity-theft protection services to the individuals whose Social Security numbers were stolen, but those individuals will be responsible for disseminating information to other people they may have listed on their background check forms. Those people, whom the government will not contact directly, will not have access to government-bought identity-protection services".

Great. I work for the government and if in yet affected, I'll feel like I just found out I had an std and have to tell past sexual partners about it.
