Costco CEO Craig Jelinek makes $831,000 per year. That's certainly a healthy sum, but it's nowhere near the outrageous figures paid to some CEOs. When Costco founder Jim Sinegal was CEO, his annual salary was just $350,000. In contrast, Wal-Mart's CEO Doug McMillon earns $4.5 million per year.

The average full-time Wal-Mart employee makes $26,728 a year. The average Costco worker is paid $43,680. Both figures do not include any overtime.

Employees and customers aren't the only ones who have benefited from Costco's effective leadership. Over the past 10 years, shareholders enjoyed a 199% price gain, while Wal-Mart shareholders earned 37%. And with dividends reinvested, Costco shareholders had a total return of 270% versus 70% for Wal-Mart investors.
