Argentina Near the Bottom?

Post by MachineGhost »

I guess populist rhetoric and handouts only last so long before the REALITY of the situation hits you smack in the face.
Argentina's voters have set the stage for a presidential run-off next month after a surprise first round on Sunday in which Daniel Scioli of the ruling Peronist coalition was denied an outright victory. Preliminary results showed both he and Buenos Aires mayor, Mauricio Macri, were neck and neck with 35% of the vote. Any winner will have to deal with the difficult economic legacy of Cristina Fernandez, who with Nestor Kirchner, her late husband and predecessor, ruled Argentina for the past 12 years. That legacy includes slowing GDP and one of the highest inflation rates in the world.
It would be interesting to see how a PP did in Argentina.  I know both stocks and gold zoomed in response to the high inflation.

An Argentine-born friend wrote me this morning to ask if I'd heard about the election tie. Hilarious.

Argentina will always be screwed. Culturally they are just too broken and corrupt to be taken seriously long-term. They really love leftist ideas and worshipping Eva Peron's carcass.

Play the economy for short-term gains if you feel adventurous, but other than that stay the hell away from Argentina.

Yes. The French aren't deliberate deadbeats. Argentines are.

Argentina emulates Spain because it was founded by Spain. Argentina is in no danger of turning into France, but is very likely to act like Spain in terms of repeated defaults and corruption from now until eternity.

I consider heavily investing in Argentina the same as heavily investing in Spain. Similar cultures and similar problems.

Populist rhetoric and handouts? Are you sure that you're not talking about the USA?
