Selling "junk silver" coins on Ebay

Post by I Shrugged »

OK I changed the subject here.

I see people selling small quantities of 90% silver (pre-65) coins on Ebay.  Has anyone bought or sold silver coins on ebay?  I am a veteran ebay seller but never with coins.  The prices I'm seeing don't appear to be particularly good for the sellers.  I'll need to get the calculator; maybe I'm wrong about that.

I have bought and sold junk silver on Ebay, but not for a few years.

My recollection is that US junk goes for a good bit above spot, Canadian a bit lower, and others a bit lower still.

A quick, non-scientific survey of the bay shows a roll (20) of 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars recently sold for $151 (with free shipping), or over $7 each.  The auction started at $9.00.  Another Kennedy half auction for five coins closed for $36.00 (bidding started at $9.99) plus $2.54 shipping.  So about $6.50 each.

A roll of circulated 90% silver quarters went for $145.95 or about $3.65 each.

Coinflation shows 90% half dollars at about $5.14 each.  Quarters about $2.57 each.

Not bad, I think.  So if you deduct out all the fees, sellers are getting probably closer to spot, and buyers are buying above spot.  Normal bid-ask spread type stuff.

Thanks.  The more I looked, the more I saw I had some homework to do. I discovered some of the lots contained a good share of war nickels, which are 35% (IIRC) silver instead of 90% silver of the other coins.  The ones that are just dimes, quarters, and halves seem to be good strong prices for the sellers.

Why buy junk silver when you can buy silver bullets?

But if you can't fire them, how will they work against werewolves? :P

Pound them in with a hammer/rubber mallet?

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I realized I couldn't actually fire it out of my .308 rifle.  Far less attractive  :'(

Two words: silver buckshot.

You can shoot just about anything out of a shotgun.

I walked into the store and saw this in the display case earlier this year.  Did a serious double take.  I almost bought one for my witch girlfriend.
