Gold coins: circulated vs new

When buying gold coins it seems that circulated coins with a random year are cheaper than new coins (2019/2020). I assume that when selling the coins this will also have an impact? What would you recommend?

I really think random year coins are fine. After all, they're all going to be random year by the time you sell them!

I don't always practice what I preach. I have bought random year coins when I first started out. Nowadays, I buy so little gold every year that I just buy the brand new stuff. It's easier to keep track of, and they're clean and shiny.

Thanks, I'll do the same then. It is quite a bit cheaper, and Krugerrands (which I'm looking at) are not so easy to scratch anyway.

I always always always get current coins fresh from the mint rather than ones in circulation.

Reduces the probability that I got a counterfeit as far as I'm concerned.

When you say "fresh from the mint", you mean "not circulated", or directly from the source (whatever that may be)?

Yeah! Well, to be fair it's the primary dealer in Vancouver that sources directly from the Royal Canadian Mint.

I suppose the coins have been through the intermediary (the dealer), but at least they haven't been in open circulation.

About as pristine as it gets here in Vancouver.
