Twitter is America's target audience, and has misled the most powerful

Post by Kriegsspiel »

In the last four years, Twitter has become America’s target audience, and subsequently, one of the most powerful groups in the country.

Applicants are hired if their Twitter accounts are presentable. Employees are fired if their past tweets don’t age well.

Politicians build laws with social media reactions in mind.

Major media companies promote, demote, and protect personalities based on retweets and likes.

Corporate America’s decisions attempt to anticipate social media results.

When America is called racist by too many blue checks, curriculum is changed.

In other words, American’s most influential individuals and industries are at the mercy of the most frequently seen and shared Twitter accounts.

As a result, these accounts dictate state policy, education, entertainment, and industry.

That’s who has the power. But who exactly are these people? They are the most easily offended, bored, pampered, and hateful sociopaths in our population. They all think alike. Yet, the all is still quite small in raw numbers.

Pew data finds that 3% of the population creates 90% of all tweets sent. Only 8% of the US population is “active” on Twitter.

Late-night TV, award shows, and comedy have adjusted content to correspond with Twitter reaction. Appealing to just 8% of viewers is bad business. Now, all three hemorrhage viewers for a nominal group of actual viewers.

In addition to a misleading sample size, Twitter has convinced the media, corporations, and politicians to adopt a narrow worldview.

The same Pew study finds that Twitter users are D+15. Were Twitter a state, it’d tie Hawaii and Vermont as America’s most liberal. What’s more, the 10% of Twitter users who post 92% of all tweets are D+43. link
I've been thinking about this for a long time. It's still perplexing why people care what insane people think. I remain an advocate for everyone getting the fuck off Twitter.

It's painting the same broadbrush for Twitter as people do for Facebook.

For my softball team roster of 27 players....Facebook provides an incredible platform for inter-player communications. Me as a coach finding out who and who is not going to be at games and having instant communications to all players by just putting it in one place and not having to communicate with each one of them individually.

Right now I have been trying to find out if today's Yankees game was going to be played.

Twitter is the absolute best place for me to get up-to-the second information as to what the field conditions are (complete with pictures) and the possibilities of the game being played.

Getting back to Facebook. It is THE platform where every musician / band (big or small) is on to connect with their fans and provide information.

The invention of the telephone facilitated a lot of criminal activity but I don't think anyone ever advocated getting rid of telephones. Or, did they??!!

All of the above are just communication tools....used for good or bad.

At least in the cases of Facebook and Twitter they are each two-way communications unlike television which is ALL one-way.

I disagree entirely. My kickball team, before the league shut down due to The Wuhan, used a simple email list to communicate. Everyone has email (it's a pre-requisite for having a Facebook account). And using email enables communication without having to log on to (much less make an account for) Facebook and be bombarded with nonsense.

Again, I disagree. The Yankees could easily post updates on their own site as they do on Twitter. I understand that Twitter/Facebook make it easier for people and companies to forego making their own site, but IMO that's a bad thing, not a good thing.

Prior to Facebook...we did use email. But using Facebook has proven to be far simpler. I used to use email for our basketball group and it was annoying to have to continually deal with email address changes and having to add and drop people. Far easier on Facebook.

Right now I have been trying to find out if today's Yankees game was going to be played.

The Yankees COULD. But they DON'T. They (and most teams) believe in keeping their fans in the dark as much as possible. With Twitter I get things like this:

Ok, I'll give you that one. The issue the article focuses on is that people perceive Twitter to be the voice of the people when it's not.
