I would just like to say, not all members' departures are my fault.
Only some.
(Also, my current sig refers to Sean Spicer).
Only some.

Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
Very close to $5000 a bitcoin. Insanity.
The thing I think about when comparing bitcoin to gold:
Would you rather own all the gold in the world or all the bitcoin in the world?

Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
Actually, neither of those would be a particularly good idea.whatchamacallit wrote:Very close to $5000 a bitcoin. Insanity.

But I think it is obvious which of those two would be better...

Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
I guess all the bitcoin in the world would amount to $0, as no one would want to participate. Gold could be sold just for being shiny and workable. But, if I had all the bitcoin in the world, I would enjoy quietly deleting it.

Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
Someone in the world has owned all available bitcoin actually. It was satoshi, the creator. He owned all the early issued coins. Which at the time were all of the available supply.dualstow wrote:I guess all the bitcoin in the world would amount to $0, as no one would want to participate. And the coins did indeed have $0 value.
People, for whatever reason, wanted to start participating.
Even after others joined in, the coins had $0 in USD exchange value.
For years. $0 value.
And yet here we are.

A valid point.
But still, spend it while you can.

Soon to be offered through as far as I know, the legitimate Robinhood.
https://crypto.robinhood.com/
Bitcoin has been up almost 2000% and currently 1000% since it passed gold and I still don't understand it.

Rule #9: Don't ever do anything you don't understand.whatchamacallit wrote: Bitcoin has been up almost 2000% and currently 1000% since it passed gold and I still don't understand it.
Which I suppose, in this scenario, means either understand crypto or stay away. Or both!

Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
As a perhaps-humorous note, perhaps giving some insight into me: I currently live in Bitcoin City, El Salvador.
And I still have the essentially same view of Bitcoin as I did when participating in this thread.
Though I do wish I had bought a whole bunch back then!

Can you explain your thoughts about it and how are you investing now?
Regards
Re: Bitcoin Costs More than Gold?
Friendly of you to ask.
I still invest with the traditional Permanent Portfolio: 4x25.
Bitcoin proves that a group of friends can get together and decide "we're going to use this as money," and even if the thing they choose seems to have no real value -- is hashes to nothing -- if they are determined to do it, buy into the vision, think it's cool, etc., it can work.
It did work.
From a technical perspective there are problems, have always been problems, with bitcoin. Some of which are fundamental and make it, just, not very good money! As far as using it to buy and sell, as a medium of exchange. Just doesn't work very well!
Monero is pretty good medium-of-exchange money. As evidenced by the fact that people use it for that, a lot.
Lightning is a layer built atop bitcoin and largely patches the problems of bitcoin and makes it usable for the bitcoin maxis. Lightning is how people buy pupusas and cocos "with bitcoin" here in El Salvador, mainly.
There's an interesting project called nockchain that's about to launch that maybe, 10 years down the road, we'll be able to look at and kick ourselves for not speculating more of our hard-earned money in, as we do for not following Bitcoin In The VP's nominary advice. But as Harry always said: don't invest -- or speculate! -- in anything you don't understand. They're targeting 3 days from now, so... can you understand it by then? Good luck. https://www.nockchain.org
