How to sell gold bullion?

Post by mukramesh »

Hypothetically, if one were to be approaching a rebalancing band and needed to sell gold bullion, say a handful of 1oz American Eagles... What is the recommended approach to selling?

Local precious metals dealer?
Online? (Website recommendations?)

Any suggestions to avoid issues with spread/premium?

I would appreciate any guidance based on your experience :D

I would sell back to Apmex or AJPM, because that’s mostly where I bought the coins from in the first place. Since they insure, it seems pretty stress free.

The post office is also closer than the local dealer I used to go to, and I’m sure he has passed on by now, as it’s been so many years.

If it’s just a handful of coins, though, I don’t see anything wrong with selling locally. Will you travel by car? I go on foot, and so I obsess about how I conceal & carry the coins.

Nothing, except that they would go out of business, shortly.
That’s why you pick a vendor with a good reputation. So they don’t mail *you* yellow tungsten.

I used to test everything I received with a coin tester that craigr mentioned a long time ago, but I never do that anymore. I just trust my vendor.

Got it. Selling back to an online vendor seems like the easiest option. Plus we can shop around for quotes.
I would check Apmex, AJPM, or TPM.

Mukramesh, I should add that Apmex doesn’t have the best spreads. At least, my experience is that the live spot price they display always looks higher than what I see at AJPM within the same sixty seconds. (I haven’t sold to them yet, only bought).

I started with AJPM because they were recommended on this site circa 2010. They were fine. But they also seemed clueless about some things, which surprised me. Turns out they were sold between the recommendation and my first visit.

Ultimately, I switched to Apmex so that I could order online instead of by phone. I like arranging my order and then clicking, like Amazon. It’s just more comfortable for me.

But if you want better spreads, it goes without saying: shop around. Just make sure you go with a place that has recent and good reviews. And make sure you read the insurance blurb, even though I cannot imagine an online vendor wouldn’t have something satisfactory.

Dealers are going to take a vig on the spread. It's the price you pay for a professional, no worries deal.

You can try your luck with a person to person sale if you want to maximize your sale price. I have not used them, but there is a fairly new peer to peer marketplace that is actively promoting itself on X that might work for you:

Oh, I like that you used vig.
For non-natives of English, see definition 4. It comes up once in a while in mobster & mafia movies, and is most often used in the context of gambling.

Scams are up in LA county (I have another fun story like the car dealer). And AI is faking profiles and reviews. Meanwhile PHYS trades in a narrow range, unlike EDV. If you get enraged by overpaying a little like I do
