Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
It’s funny reading the above because I came here to ask if you enjoyed last night’s ball game, Vin.
I just saw the highlights on the news.

Nobody had gotten 4 extra base hits in the World Series since 1906. Nobody had ever been intentionally walked 4 times in a postseason game.
Ohtani did both in the same game.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I was so tired during it but there was no way I could get to bed while it was still going on. I finally got to bed at 3:30 AM.

Trump: Nuclear Testing
This timeline seems to be getting worse and worse.
Is this guy for real? Maybe I'm off base.. is it good for America to begin resuming nuclear weapons testing as a matter of national defense? What do you guys think?

Re: Trump: Nuclear Testing
He's never been qualified to be president on so many levels. Then he did not many things to disqualify him.
The whole January 6th thing plus the pardons on top of that seem to not matter for all those who voted for him.
I'll let those who voted for him respond to his actions, including this action / question you are asking.

Nope. I haven’t really looked into it, but … no.

Absolutely insane.
As a side note: political wild cards like Trump are EXACTLY why strategies like the PP exist and are prudent.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I can’t remember: do you ever read fiction?

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I almost never read fiction haha.
Currently reading the new Andrew Ross Sorkin book 1929.
As enthralling as any work of fiction. The first-hand accounts of late October are crazy.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I generally shun it because I find that truth is stranger than fiction. Plus if a non-fiction topic interests you .. you can pursue it endlessly while you are subject to the whims of the fiction writing writing. I've enjoyed fiction but find that it cannot stand up to non-fiction in terms of quality. Too much artificiality in it and overwrought writing.
I did buy three fiction books in a series written by someone who has a weekly Saturday column in my local newspaper. Read the first one in one night. Nothing profound or heavyweight.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I have seen that author on TV now three or four times.
Those enthralling facts are even more enthralling when you realize that they are true. No fiction writer could ever dream up all those details.
Here is one.
Suppose you wrote a book in 2012 which was essentially to all Trump has been from when he came down that escalator in 2015 to the present?
Every book publisher would reject it as being unbelievable!
Well truth again proves to be far stranger than fiction.
We are living the unbelievable1

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
It seems like your premise, both of you, is that stranger = better.
Vinny, I just bought a speed-reading book. Something I thought I’d never do a second time*, but you’ve inspired me.
*Tried one briefly as a youngster.

Yeah, Vinny, I'm also not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me.

Now it does and valuable to me! Thanks!
I am now going to look at it.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I "purchased" it on May 21, 2021! Probably got it free via all the free Kindle books I'd get every day from a daily free Kindle book email I am still receiving. For quite awhile I diligently go through all on that email and get many free books a day. Then is my wont of being binary-like in my behavior where I am either completely or off .. I just stopped. Never to do it again.
I've never ever looked at the book.
But based upon this review from yesterday .. it looks like you found an excellent one. So excellent that I am going to open it today and start reading it. The review seems to say that it will be the same and build upon what I did from 1966 to 1968.
Thanks for bringing this gem to my attention! Opening it now so that it will be there for when I later go to it. I probably won't speed read it as I'm sure it has things it wants you to do while you are doing your normal reading.

It's very clear most people posting negative comments here have not actually read the book or tried the techniques. All they're saying is why it wouldn't or couldn't work or making assumptions that speed reading is about skimming, scanning, or skipping words. That's what most speed reading books I've read teach but not this one. This actually teaches you to read every word faster without skimming, scanning or skipping anything. But more than that it teaches you to understand better and remember longer. In fact the author even says numerous times throughout the book that speed reading isn't reading without comprehension. His techniques are super easy which don't take much time or effort, just shifting how you look at words. I found myself reading faster almost right away and yes I was understanding better too. If you follow the advice in the later chapters you can speed up even more. Again not sacrifice to understanding but enhances it too. The chapter on remembering what you read is the icing on the top. The human brain forgets a lot sometimes within hours or even minutes. That includes the stuff you read. Just because you read something doesn't mean it'll stay, so if you're going to spend time reading or learning don't you want to make sure it stays long enough for you to use don't you? This is the only book that offers an easy way to do that. I'm confident you will like all of it. It's not a hard read and he backs everything up with science and studies that show speed reading is possible and for you.

Seeing its first page is oh so tempting to want to jump in reading it rather than doing the other things I had planned for now and the next hours. But I WILL stay disciplined!

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
You’re cracking me up.
I suppose there’s no chance of me finishing the book before you do. It’s short, anyway.
I got a copy of Slow Horses book 5 in the mail today and switched to that. I’ll use my new-found techniques on it.
