Pick Your Poison
What do you drink after a long day?
I prefer Crown Royal, and have been hooked on making the “Whisky Old Fashioned”? after I saw this clip from Mad Man (3:36):

Re: Pick Your Poison
I really think it depends on the mood you're in. Sometimes I get home and I want coffee. Other times green tea. Other times if there's a beer around I'll go for that. I like having options when I open the fridge and that brings me solace that I'm in control of what I drink for that brief moment.

After a long day I don't want to deal with more than 2-3 ingredients. My standbys are
gimlet
bourbon & branch
rye & ginger
boilermaker
and various microbrew beers

I'm also a whiskey fan. The old fashioned is one of my favorite drinks. If you like Crowne Royal, try Forty Creek. It's also a Canadian, and I find it to have a lot more flavor. I think it's slightly cheaper as well. I also like Maker's Mark and Woodford Reserve if I'm in the mood for Bourbon.
I'm also a big beer fan; I pretty much drink every style but this time of year I like a good pilsner or kolsch.

Re: Pick Your Poison
I would favor one of many fine Belgian beers, e.g., Rochefort, or Westmalle.
Re: Pick Your Poison
I've recently been developing a taste for scotch, and my most recent purchase was a bottle of Glenmorangie (evidently the best-selling single malt in Scotland). It's quite good.
I'm also partial to dark, malty, complex beers such as imperial stouts and barleywines. Deschutes "The Abyss" and Firestone "Parabola" are two of my absolute favorites.

Another Don Draper favorite, a Martini.
Usually Hendricks gin and Vya vermouth. But I'm flexible about the makings.

A good vodka martini - Grey Goose is my preference, although I recently discovered that Svedka is almost the same taste/quality at less than half the price. My other drink of choice would be a nice hoppy IPA, something like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or my recent favorite (only available around Christmas) which was the Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale.

With olives? I usually use the standard pimento ones, but I do like anchovy or blue cheese-stuffed on occasion. Not traditional, but tasty.Storm wrote:A good vodka martini

+1 for Glenmorangie. I also love listening to the pronunciation sample at wikipedia and repeating it like Sean Connery. (Glen-MOHR-un-jih)

Re: Pick Your Poison
I'm currently drinking Guinness Extra Stout. Don't know why but there is something about it that makes me want to quit after only two or three.
Also fond of Crown Royal but will have to try the other Canadian whiskey that was mentioned.

Forty Creek is pretty good, but I find it a little too "raw" for my taste, I prefer the smoothness of Crown which makes it a great sipping whiskey.hoost wrote: I'm also a whiskey fan. As a resident of the Pacific NW, we have a very large selection of microbreweries that are very good. However since I'm trying to lose weight and restrict carbs, I avoid beer now.
I find myself more and more a Red Wine person. Maybe it abates my sweet tooth. Recently though my friends have gotten me into tasting Whiskey and while at first I didn't like it that much, now I will say that I do appreciate sipping on different types and the flavor.
Then again I told my brother this and he said: "Whiskey? Doesn't that taste like dirt?"

Re: Pick Your Poison
I used to be a fan of single malt scotch or bourbon. Never really much cared for beer. But nowadays I rarely drink except for an occasional glass of wine over a nice dinner. I favor reds, especially port, but I also like a good Hock now and then.

Balentines scotch or Newcastle brown ale, neither is anything fancy or posh, but both seem to be a good example of better than average quality at a cheaper cost than comparable adult beverages...

Re: Pick Your Poison
That's an interesting perspective. How would you qualify raw? It seems to me, and I haven't done a side-by-side comparison in quite a while, that Crown is a bit more sweet and flavored mostly from the grain, whereas Forty Creek has more flavors from the wood it's aged in. I get a sort of vanilla and caramel flavor from it that I really enjoy; maybe that "raw" taste comes from the flavor of the wood? I'll have to do a comparison when I get back home to see if I can taste what you're talking about.Gosso wrote: Forty Creek is pretty good, but I find it a little too "raw" for my taste, I prefer the smoothness of Crown which makes it a great sipping whiskey.
Re: Pick Your Poison
It's been a while since I have had Forty Creek, so it's possible my palate has changed. I'll have to get a bottle and see how I like it now. But the "raw" taste is likely from the wood flavour...possibly more tannins?hoost wrote:That's an interesting perspective. How would you qualify raw? I also greatly enjoy the "buzz" from Crown, and Gin is good for this as well. I find beer just puts me to sleep, and wine does almost nothing for me. It's strange how it's all alcohol, but yet the experience varies greatly.

In that case never mind!
Re: Pick Your Poison
Sipping on Forty Creek as I type this, and I gotta say it is very pleasant. I'm not sure why I considered it to be "raw", I suppose my taste for whiskey has grown since I last consumed Forty Creek. I can definitely taste the vanilla and caramel, which gives it a slightly creamy taste. I am a fan!hoost wrote:That's an interesting perspective. How would you qualify raw? Re: Pick Your Poison
Great! I'm glad you like it. I still haven't got a chance to do the side-by-side comparison. My time off got cut short this week. I think it's a bit less sweet than Crown. I just picked up a Bourbon called Rowan's Creek that the guy at the liquor store recommended. It's going to be a gift, so I'm not sure if I'll get to try it, but if I do I'll report back.
