In all seriousness, I used to be a proponent of gun control. But the more time I spend on this forum, the more I want to own firearms for protection in case of SHTF.
That's the spirit! Once you've got one, you might discover that shooting it is a lot of fun. .22s are cheap as heck and very easy to learn with, and .223/5.56 rifles can be incredibly fun to shoot. Where are you located? I'm sure anyone on this forum who's nearby would be happy to take you shooting sometime.
Gun ownership and shooting are not necessarily about preparing for SHTF, shooting animals, or preparing for any kind of violence.  It's just a fun thing to do.

If you pick up a Ruger 10/22, a few high capacity magazines, 1,000 rounds or so of .22 ammo and a bunch of tin cans, bottles and maybe an old clock radio or computer monitor you can entertain yourself for hours.
Q: “Do you have funny shaped balloons?”
A: “Not unless round is funny.”

Says the man from Texas, LOL
I live in a suburb NW of Chicago. Any takers?
Are you saying that you can't buy a gun or you don't have a place to shoot it?

I have driven through Illinois several times and every time I stop in areas away from the cities, it looks like there are plenty of good places to shoot and plenty of gun owners.  I'll bet there is a great place to shoot within an hour of your house.

I'm afraid that fact that you live in Illinois complicates things. Unlike all other states, in IL you need a license (FOID card) to even touch a gun, so you would need to get one of those before another Illinois resident could go out with you within the state. Chicago imposes additional restrictions on top of the statewide restrictions, so it might be difficult to get one from a Chicago issuer as they're currently dragging their feet and making it as difficult as possible for Chicago residents.

It might be easier in the short term to visit someone in Indiana or Wisconsin, which are much freer states when it comes to firearms.
