Fool's Gold
It would appear having gold in one's portfolio is not considered "Smart Money"...

Re: Fool's Gold
it seems I have recently encountered multiple articles, interviews disparaging gold in the last few weeks.
Buffett, Munger, Bill Gates, an article in the WSJ in past wk, this article. Is this an uptick in these kinds of messages of late in the mainstream financial press? Or have they been there all along, and i'm just noticing more of them recently?
The timing seems suspicious (to my goldbug sensitivities), considering that gold has recently made a triple bottom, staying inside the range of $1500-1900 of the last year.
Also, has Bill Gates made financial recommendations in the past to the public at large?

Re: Fool's Gold
All of the above surely adds up to a buy signal.
I haven't heard so much trash talk about an asset class since long term treasuries in the first half of 2011.

Re: Fool's Gold
I believe that this in fact is the article that was in the WSJ this past weekend.
Re: Fool's Gold
Another example of not looking at ones portfolio as a whole. We don't hold gold in the PP because it throws off interest or dividends, we hold it because it is a form of insurance against certain unpredictable economic events. In fact that is the reason we hold all four asset classes. Case in point; Long Term Treasuries.PP67 wrote: It would appear having gold in one's portfolio is not considered "Smart Money"...

Re: Fool's Gold
it reinforces the buy signal for me (triple bottom in low 1500s...blasting thru 1600 last friday)MediumTex wrote: All of the above surely adds up to a buy signal.

what i find notable is that the amount of propaganda seems highly coordinated.
In particular, bringing out Bill Gates to bash metal. Would anyone other than a naive retail investor buy this malarkey from Gates?
Re: Fool's Gold
Heh. Two questions come to mind. First, why would anyone even want to ask Bill Gates about gold? And second, why would he not just say "That's a complex asset that I don't understand as well as I'd like so I tend not to invest in it"?murphy_p_t wrote: In particular, bringing out Bill Gates to bash metal. Re: Fool's Gold
I don't blame people who have a natural drive to make things work better, and who have built amazingly successful businesses off of that drive, having a natural inclination that investing in gold is a joke.
However, placing this person in an article as an expert is a bit much.

Re: Fool's Gold
It is interesting to think about how much gold Central Banks around the world hold, yet so-called "investment professionals" are constantly talking about gold as a foolish investment.
There is a reason why Central Banks hold onto gold, even if it doesn't fit into Bill Gates or Charlie Munger's investment style.

Buffett is a pretty good contrarian indicator for gold.

Re: Fool's Gold
Of course, since none of us would ever engage in market timing, the only real question is ...
Do we need to add gold to our PP to get the proper percentage mix of assets?
