It's certainly not good for the price of gold near term. But long term it could be a wash as it will make it harder to drive down the price of gold by manufacturing a situation that creates lots of margin calls. And as someone who is deeply opposed to trading on margin at all, I am not exactly unhappy with this development. Indeed a number of countries have (wisely) severely restricted trading on margin.
