Just to get the conversation going, IMO, Edward Snowden is a true patriot.

Yes, of course he is a patriot.
But my point was that John Oliver has found the "killer app" to get Americans actually concerned about being spied on. I think he deserves the Pulitzer Prize (or some other major prize) for that!

As long as there is a "tribal" alignment with those in the "defense" and "intelligence" industries departments, Americans will continue to support their civil liberties being eroded.  The dick-pick route was entertaining, but little-else.

This is why a republican president is perhaps useful.  Liberals actually care about civil liberties (generally) when there's a conservative taking them away vs a "progressive." 

Though one could argue similar double-standards for swaths of the the soft-libertarian wing of Republicans.
