I thought this news was interesting:

SeaWorld intends to challenge a decision banning it from breeding killer whales in captivity, after California authorities gave the theme park permits for two larger orca pools on condition it stops the practice. Attendance at SeaWorld (NYSE:SEAS) has steadily declined since the release of the popular documentary "Blackfish" in 2013, and the company's stock price has suffered as a result. SEAS closed at $18.77 a share on Thursday. In May 2013, the stock price was $38.88.

Some C-suite executives just don't get it.

Just got back from Maine where we visited my brother and ate lobster nearly every day.

My brother has a dog he's had for many years and is about 88 in dog years and nearing the end. My brother and his wife never had any kids and I think they treat him even better than a lot of children get treated.

He was a nice dog and I liked him myself but it makes you think what is the difference between a lobster and a dog any way?

Higher order consciousness, emotions and morality.  I'm not sure if dogs have a concept of self like a few other animals.

Although, we really can't be sure.  If it turns out lesser life forms like lobster have those aspects also, I think we're in a world of trouble (and need petri-dish cloned meat, STAT).

But we can only measure these things in human terms, and even then how can we possibly know we are correct?

Maybe only if we get re-incarnated as a lobster.

Fortunately (or unfortunately?) reincarnation does not appear to work in the direction of lower life forms.  However, that doesn't mean you then get have a license to be callous about killing them.  I'm sure the universe in its rational self-consistency finds a way to address the resulting karmic imbalance.  No free lunch...

Only if one is deemed worthy by the expanded welfare state ... but then again, the individual pays for those free lunches in "lost liberty" chits and the provider of the free lunch just took someone else's goods to redistribute as a free lunch, so I guess you are right after all.

Yes, I do. And it disturbs me. So does the way they treat pugs pigs, cows and chickens. I have considered becoming a vegetarian, but the food choices are too limited. I do acknowledge that's a lame cop-out excuse for eating meat.

Same here. I am not a good vegetarian, but I'm working at being a "meat reducer" and a mindful carnivore. The first thing is self-explanatory. As for the second, I buy my pigs and chickens from a farmers' market, where they are murdered with tender loving care.

The vegan chef who was once married to the star of [url=http://Super%20Size%20Me]Super Size Me[/url] started eating meat years ago, although it may have been after she split up with the documentarian, so no influence there. Her blog entry about it said she needed meat. The woman had a craving, what can you do?

As far as I know, dog is not on her menu.
Honestly, I would try dog, but it would also have to be raised ethically. Any illicit trade, and you know it's just the worst of the worst as far as these animals' lives go.
