Magazines properly formatted for tablets

Post by I Shrugged »

I inherited an iPad 2.  Is there now a way to buy most any magazine PROPERLY formatted to read on an iPad or other tablet?  In the past, when I've tried with other people's tablets, magazine formatting was awful.

Define "properly".

Seems like there are almost as many magazine apps as there are magazines, and each magazine uses a different one.  You're stuck with whatever the publisher chooses, there's no "universal" magazine app.

No scrolling side to side, and proper viewing of photos.

I just came across a new thing, texture, at texture.com.  Quite a few mainstream magazines for a small monthly fee.  I'm loading the app now. We'll see.

Edit to add:
$10/month to read all the monthlies in their catalog.  There are many.  $15 gets you the monthlies plus the weeklies such as Time, Newsweek, People, SI, things of that sort.  Once you select some "favorites", the app sets up a selection of articles from them.  You can either download an entire magazine to read it, or just browse the article list and read one article without downloading the whole magazine.  This could be helpful on a tablet that lacks a lot of memory.  My review after one hour of use is very good, well worth $10/month.

I think you need a tablet that is as wide or wider as a regular magazine's width, otherwise it will be narrowly squeezed to preserve the aspect ratio?  You wand PDF or some custom graphics format, not reflowing ePUB crap.
